FULL PRESS RELEASE
New Era of Health Care Services of Coast Indigenous
28th April 2004

An historic joint partnership agreement is about to be signed off between NCACCH, the Sunshine Coast Division of General Practice (DGP), the Sunshine Coast District Health service and the Gympie District Health service.

NCACCH is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health & Ageing, Office of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health, to purchase health services for Indigenous people residing in the Sunshine Coast & Gympie regions.

A Brokerage Model of health service delivery has been developed which includes over 150 local mainstream health service providers.

These health service professionals include doctors, dentists, counsellors, diabetes educators, nutritionists and podiatrists and are registered with NCACCH to provide a wide range of timely and geographically accessible services.

A very close working relationship has been developed with workers from the Indigenous Health Team Queensland Health (QH) to provide access for Indigenous people to these services. All QH workers are official Referrers for NCACCH. They are the initial point of contact for people who need some form of health issue addressed and which cannot be accessed in a reasonable time in the public health system.

NCACCH and the Sunshine Coast Division of General Practice have also developed the Indigenous Health Information & Access Scheme. There are currently 113 general practitioners registered with NCACCH who will provide GP consultations and services for Indigenous people. This allows increased access to convenient, local services at no cost to the patient. With the full consent of the patient the GP will also collect and forward to NCACCH de-identified health data which enables NCACCH to specifically target populations with health programs.

The signing of this agreement will be the first of its kind in this country and will go a long way to improving the health status of the Indigenous people residing in the regions.
