Congratulations

John Spink the NCACCH CEO and Aunty Olive Bennet from the board, have been appointed by the Minister for Health as members of the District Health Council for the next 4 years.

They act as community representatives and advise the state government health divisions on where health needs attention. They have NO authority for decision making.

Congratulations

Deadly Sex Congress

Jacqui Wruck attended the deadly Sex Congress in Cairns between 14/02/2005—17/02/2005. North Coast was represented by Lyn Baird, and Georgia Corowa from Life Bridge in Kawana. Lyn and Georgia deliver sexual health training to various schools across the Sunshine Coast.
All sorts of topics were covered over the 4 day workshop. We got to network with over 50 sexual health workers within QLD. The topics ranged from development of 2nd National Indigenous Australian Sexual Health strategy to types of sexually transmitted and infectious diseases. We spoke on sexual health testing; the why, when and what.
We covered public speaking skills development and issues sexual health workers face within communities.
Issues within the workforce were discussed e.g. not enough sexual health workers, recognition for workers within the community.
We also received stats from the Men’s Sexual Health Survey. (Stats may be reviewed at next AGM).
Chroming and blood collection and drug dispensing were also discussed.
A trip to the Cairns Sexual Health Service, Wuchopperen, was organised during the congress. The group was split into two with each visiting both centres. It was interesting to see how they operate and how it compares to our organisations down here.
It was a successful and educational 4 days, one of which we would have all gained knowledge from. Recommendations will be put to the board for future consideration.

Welcome

Welcome to Sharelle Eggmolesse, our new consultant for Project Work. Sharelle commenced on 21 February 2005 and we are sure her experience and community involvement will help NCACCH successfully run their events in the 2005 year.

Hello, and thank you for making me feel welcome within my new role. I am happy to be here and hope I am able to contribute to the already successful running of NCACCH. I am currently working on the following projects:

Men’s / Women’s Group
World Health Check Day at Gympie
Sport and Rec submission
Newsletter
Referrer and Service Provider updates/meetings

Please feel free to contact me on 54433599 or 0428384646 with any questions or ideas/information for any of the above.

I wonder how well the Brokerage Model is going?

Brokerage Model
Wow: That Many

The number of clients accessing North Coast services continues to grow. To date the total clients including dependants amounts to 2,700 covering the Sunshine Coast and Gympie area. There are approx 3100 identified Indigenous people on the coast.

This is a very large %age of the population for any service to have on their books and goes to show that the people are happy with the services provided by NCACCH.

The number of visits to GP’s in the 2004 calendar year was 2489 by 640 people. That means on average each person had visited the doctor 3.9 times annually.

Indigenous Women’s Health Group

The next meeting was held on 22 March 2005 at the Power Boat Club Golden Beach for lunch.
Indigenous Women

One of our female counsellors came along and discussed relevant issues concerning the mental health issues of our people which she had encountered.

Phone Sharelle on 54433599 if you would like to attend the next one and be included in our mail-out.

Flu and Pneumonia Shots

It is that time of year again, and with Winter fast approaching we want to make sure you and your family are protected against the dreaded colds and flu's we are all prone to.
Indigenous Women

A clinic will be held at NCACCH on 27 April 2005 between the times of 9.00am—1.00pm.

Contact the Indigenous Health team on 54437839 for further information on dates, venues and times available.

Referrers News

Please take a chance to look at the new Referrer list as there have been some changes with people moving or changing jobs and unable to participate in the program.

We now have a Physiotherapist on the register which will be very welcomed by some of you.

With the loss of LC Wynn dental in Maroochydore, we are also recruiting new dental services within the area.

Hopefully we should have a dentist in Maroochy on board as soon as possible.

World Persons Health Check Day

The World Persons Health Check Day is being held at the Gympie Civic Centre on 13 April 2005 for Gympie residents only. This will be a great day involving free food, entertainment and health checks. It kicks off at 9.00am and will go through to 3.00pm.

There are prizes for people who volunteer to go through our health checks which involve: blood testing for diabetes, weight and height checks, urine checks for sexual health, blood pressure and eye checks. More details will be available on the day.

It will also incorporate the Indigenous Pneumococcal & Influenza Immunization shots. The men's group meeting was held on 18 March 2005 at the Café By The Beach at Moffat Beach. Back to the Index
