NCACCH had the great pleasure of having The Hon Tony Abbott, Federal Minister for Health, The Hon Alex Somlyay, MP for Fairfax and The Hon Peter Slipper MP for Fisher visit our office on 15 March 2006.
Board Members, Staff and Fiona McGrath from the Local Division of General Practices were available to meet and greet our visitors and it was used as a great opportunity to show the success of our brokerage model and how it works in partnership with the Local G. P’s.
Tony presented NCACCH with the approval of a $60K grant for a dedicated brokerage model database which will be able to be implemented nationally.
John Spink CEO and Tom Cleary Chairperson explained the brokerage model and how it works.

The members and staff of NCACCH hope everyone had a happy and safe Easter period.
With the start of 2006 well under way, we hope to continue our great service and with the promise of extra funding becoming available, expand on our already successful services available for you and your families.
We will keep you up to date with future changes in upcoming newsletters and correspondence but would like to remind everyone to contact the office with any personal changes eg. Address, phone number etc. This way we can ensure you receive all relevant information in a timely fashion.

The Minister was very impressed with our presentation and is very eager for more models like ours to be used in other Indigenous Communities.
The Minister also asked us about what we input we could have to influence the Federal Government’s policy regarding Indigenous Health.
We had great coverage from the local television station to promote NCACCH to the community.

WORLD PERSONS HEALTH CHECK
AND
BROKERAGE MODEL LAUNCH
|
NCACCH hosted this years World Persons Health Check at the Millwell Road Community Centre in Maroochydore on 31 March 2006. It was proudly supported by NCACCH, Dept of health & Aging, Qld Health and the Division of G.P.’s.
Tom Cleary and the local Gubbi Gubbi Dance troupe welcomed and opened the day with The Hon Alex Somlyay, Local Member for Fairfax officially launching the NCACCH Brokerage Model.
There were 19 stall holders with 4 health check stations doing urine, blood pressure, height and weight and diabetes checks. We also incorporated the immunisation shots as well as having Australian Hearing doing tests and 2 local G.P.’s on hand to answer any questions.
NCACCH bags were made up which included a shirt, hat, drink bottle, fling thing, pen and brochures. These were presented to all persons who attended the health check stations. We also had special bags for the kids which included a hat, drink bottle, balloon and fling thing.
Paula Wootton was our resident cook for the day with help from her daughter Jackie Wruck, Tom Cleary and Aunty Olive Bennett. Dale Chapman and Renee Baldwin did a cooking demonstration sharing some great tips when cooking with natural bush foods.
Lyndon Davis and his Gubbi Gubbi dance troupe held an Art/Storytelling workshop
and a Dance/Didgeridoo workshop.
The kids were able paint their own boomerang and help paint the banner which will be placed at the Nambour Hospital for showing. They were also able to participate in the closing dance at the end of the day showing off their newfound dance skills.

Entertainment for the kids included a jumping castle, face painting, Fudzwallop the clown and various activities held by Family Planning Qld including a chocolate wheel and condom blowing up competitions.
It was a fun filled, educational day for both the community and stall holders alike. It was a chance for the local organisations/government departments to liaise with and spread awareness of their services. We had a great turnout with over 200 people attending the day and 105 people participating in the health stalls.
NCACCH would like to thank our MC for the day, Travis Shorey and all the people involved in making this day a success including the following stall holders: Centrelink, Oral Health, QUIN, ATODS, Breast Screen, Red Cross, Cultural Healing, Laurel House, WHO’s, Family Planning QLD, HOPE, Kabbarli, Nutrition, Cardiac, Diabetes, Blue Care, Qld Health and Medicare.
We hope to hold this event yearly in both the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions.

SEXUAL HEALTH POSTER COMPETITION
1st Prize Winner 13-16 Yr Old
Brendan Witteman
This drawing represents before and after unsafe sex. The boy & girl have no protection on them. The boy thinks it will be ok to have unsafe sex, and that the girl won’t get pregnant or neither of them will catch a sexually transmitted disease. 9 mths later, the girl has a child. With both of them having this child, 85 percent of the time the boy doesn’t stick around because they find it too
hard to look after themselves, let alone a baby.
They tell their story to the child of all the things they missed out on, like finishing school, getting a good job, all the cool things they missed out on with their friends, going to the movies and parties with their mates, all because they made one mistake of having unsafe sex. Around the sun are the mums and dads talking to their children about how important it is to have safe sex these days. Because you don’t want to be a kid bringing up a kid, you would never survive without a good job and who would want to employ a kid without education? You can’t survive on welfare benefits because life is getting too expensive and too hard to survive.
NCACCH hosted the 2006 Sexual Health Poster Competition. This was a great opportunity for all our budding young artists to put together their interpretation of our theme: “Sexual Health Through The Eyes of An Indigenous Teen.”
The competition ran from 15 August 2005—28 October 2005. It was open to all 13-19 year olds within the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions. Details were given to all the public schools, youth organizations/agencies and community/government workers to pass onto interested persons.
A judging panel was selected to judge the entries received. The panel consisted of:
Leone Smith - Qld Health
Lance Lewis - Dept Education
Toby Adams - Indigenous Employment and Training Co-Ordinator
Justin Saunders - Qld Aboriginal & Islander Health Council
Stephen Hogarth - Artist
Aunty Lorraine Harvey and Jill Hogarth - NCACCH Board Member’s
An awards ceremony for the 12 winning entries was held on 07 March 2006 at the Sands Tavern in Maroochydore. The prizes included:
1st Prize 13-16Yr Old $1000 shopping voucher to Sunshine Plaza
1st prize 17-19 Yr Old $1000 shopping voucher to Sunshine Plaza
2nd Prize Portable DVD Player
3rd Prize MP3 Player
4th—12th Prize $50 shopping voucher to Sunshine Plaza |

The entries received were of very high quality and was very difficult for the judges to pick out the 12 winning entries. We would like to thank every one of our entrants and the effort they put into their posters. We hope to hold another competition next year, with even more interest from our young community members.
The winning entries will form part of a NCACCH 2007/08 calendar, to be published and distributed later in the year.

The Aboriginal Flag represents the whole of the Indigenous Community. Instead of the yellow circle, a map of Australia was used, as Sexual Health affects the whole nation. The straight, lesbian, gay male and transgender symbols were used as it effects all aspects of sexuality. The symbols were put in a green box (for sickness).
NCACCH HEALTH SERVICES DATA UPDATE
 |
Our renewal for membership will be coming up shortly, so please continue to support this great service for only $5 per year.
The more memberships we hold, the better services we are able to offer. If you know of anyone that is not currently a member, please have them complete a membership application. |
This graph and figures show the amount of referrals and visits to our most
commonly used services. The figures shown are from when NCACCH first started this model.
Effective 31 March 2006 we currently have 990 people on our Health Access Card (not including dependants) database and 1461 clients (not including dependants) on our referral database. This is a majority of the identified indigenous population on the Sunshine Coast and Gympie areas.

EXISTING HAC CARD HOLDERS
With the time nearing for new cards to be issued to all our existing HAC Card holders, it is very important we have all your current details. If you have had a change of address, change of dependant details or contact details, you will need to contact the NCACCH office before 30 April 2006 to ensure your cards are sent out with the correct information.

WANNA BE DEADLY - MURGON
“Wanna Be Deadly” is a project which utilises sport as a vehicle to engage young Indigenous people, aged between 12-25, from across the Wide Bay Burnett and Sunshine Coast/Nambour regions, in which to improve their health and well-being, and further enhance their connectedness to their local community/ies. Wanna be Deadly has also adopted a holistic approach, emphasising healthy lifestyles and looks at addressing such areas as mental health promotion, alcohol, tobacco and other drug use and sexual behaviour.
The project aims at engaging two teams, both a boys and girls/mixed team from each of the seven identified sites including the Sunshine Coast. Each team consists of approx 10 young Indigenous people with a youth worker as coach/mentor.
The project is coordinated by Wandiny RAPAA Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation, and in collaborative partnership with Sport and Rec QLD, Hervey Bay City Council, QLD Health Central Public Health Unit Network-Wide Bay and Korrawinga.
This year the touch football carnival was held in Murgon across the week-end of 1-2 April 2006. |
With the support of NCACCH, Kabbarli and local youth worker and 6 volunteers, we were able to transport 22 kids and 4 parents to the event. We had an A and B (mixed) team involved in the competition. Both teams made it to the semi finals, but unfortunately, due to time restrictions we had to leave early to make it home in time for pick ups.
We had a trouble free, fun filled week-end staying at the Ficks Crossing Camp Centre just outside of the town centre. Our participants showed great sportsmanship and participated in all events. We were very proud of our achievements on the day.
We will hopefully be able to hold one of these week-ends on the Sunshine Coast next year, with preparations starting very soon. So if you know anyone that may be interested in participating or organising please contact the Cultural Healing Team on 54504700.
This is a great event to host and show the rest of the region what we, as a community are able to achieve with great enthusiasm and success.
