REFERRER UPDATE

On Friday 22 June 2007 NCACCH held it’s most recent referrer’s workshop for all current referrer’s. This is an ongoing process with all referrer’s to keep them up to date with the latest policy and procedure changes.
This gives referrer’s and staff of NCACCH a chance to get together and talk about any issues and updates they may face in dealing with clients. These regular meetings help improve NCACCH service to all our clients to ensure consistency in information and accessing services is maintained.
We are currently trying to recruit new referrer’s in the Caloundra, Coolum, Peregian and Noosa/Tewantin areas, so if there is anyone in an employed position, or you know of someone who would like to come on board, please contact NCACCH on 54433599 to discuss.
NCACCH greatly appreciate all the fantastic work that the referrer’s do for us and our community in order to help gain access to all the services available.

Great Job

Health Access

In March 2007 NCACCH mailed a Health Access Card - Updated Details form (yellow) to all our Health Access Card holders requesting an update of personal information, Medicare details and to sign off on a new privacy notice we are now using.
These changes have been made so we are able to continue to improve our services to you. The reason we need this information is so we can use your de identified data to help us continue funding for the great services you receive. We assure you that your privacy is protected and your name or personal details are never given to other organisations.
Because our client numbers have increased, we have installed a new data base. We would like to take this opportunity to update your records on our system when we record your Medicare details.
Regardless of how long you have had your Health Access Card you are still required to complete and return the form.
All forms were due back by “30 June 2007”. If you haven’t returned your form your Health Access Card will be cancelled in December 2007.
If you need a new form, phone NCACCH and a new one will be sent to you.

Gympie Well Persons Health Check

The Gympie Well Persons Health Check was held at The Civic Centre in Gympie on 20 April 2007.
The day was hosted by NCACCH and in partnership with Qld health and Division of General Practices who supplied the medical staff and equipment for the day.
The event started at 10.00am and finished after 3.00pm. It was a great day for the community to get together for a day full of entertainment, food, health checks, information stalls and prizes.
Butchella community elder Aunty Nai Nai Bird did the welcome to country and opened the day with the Gubbi Gubbi dance troupe doing the welcome dance.
There were approx 200 people in attendance with 66 people participating in the health checks, and 40 people having their influenza injections. There were over 20 organisations who held information

stalls. This was great way for them to network with each other and to link in with the Indigenous Community.
There were over 4 qualified nurses and doctors present to complete the health checks which included blood glucose, height and weight, urine, smoking and exercise questions, blood pressure and GP checks. For all the clients who completed a health check on the day went into the draw to win a 68cm television (1st prize) and a DVD (second prize). The lucky winners were drawn by Aunty Olive Bennet.
Entertainment included the Gubbi Gubbi Dance Troupe, Clown, Face Painting and Jumping Castle for the kids.
Family Planning had a chocolate wheel which was directed at youth, but available to all attendees to help educate and make aware sexual health issues. They also had a condom blowing competition which drew a range of

ages from the crowd. This was a great way to demonstrate the importance of sexual health in a fun filled environment.
Gympie Community Health were a huge hit with their “Go For 2 and 5” stall. They held numerous food presentations and competitions throughout the day where cookbooks, aprons, bags and other information was given away to lucky winners. Everyone was keen to be part of all activities available.
They had a selection of fresh fruit and veges with taste testing for everyone. All left over food was given away at the end of the day.
Over all it was a successful day for NCACCH, Qld Health and the Division of GP’s. NCACCH hopes to see you all at next years event.

The Sandplay Process
The uniqueness of Sandplay Therapy includes its combined use of sand, water and miniature figures. This combination helps the participant to explore inner strengths and to find the resiliency that exists in their imagination.
Because Sandplay involves the body in the placing of figures and moving of sand, it is an actual experience, not simply potential. As such, once a participant has created a significant image in the sand tray, its power becomes available to enrich everyday life.
Participants immediately show their individuality by responding to the same materials and introduction in many different ways, but almost always with interest, enthusiasm and eagerness to explore the possibilities. There is little awkwardness, difficulty in establishing rapport, or confusion about what is expected of them.

Why Sandplay Works
Sandplay is a holistic process that brings together many opposites.
Sand worlds express both distress and coping, difficulties and strengths, destruction and reconstruction, concurrently releasing feelings and activating inner resources.
Using both hands simultaneously engages both lobes of the brain, increasing visual skills and harnessing imagination.
The body is engaged in shaping the scenes and the soul connects to a deeply felt experience.
The process engages both the introverted (creating) and extroverted (expressing) parts of the individual.
Sandplay allows the unconscious to lead, and healing to happen from within.

When the individual is given sand, symbols and silent support, resolution takes place on an unconscious symbolic level.
In a very real way, you can see your feelings and touch your thoughts.

Sandplay is just one of the many options for counselling and is available through INSIDE OUT Expressive Therapies Counselling. Monique Rutherford is a current Service Provider with NCACCH and she offers individual counselling for children and adolescents.
Monique is a registered teacher, a Child and Family Therapist and an accredited Expressive therapies Counsellor in private practice. She has experience in facilitating counselling and psychoeducational workshops for both adults and children.
If you think Monique can help you or your children, contact a referrer for a referral.

2007/08 SEXUAL HEALTH POSTER CALENDAR

This calendar is proudly produced by NCACCH and is a display of the winning entries that were entered into the 2005/06 NCACCH Sexual Health Poster Competition ie; “Sexual Health Through the Eyes of an Indigenous Teenager”. Young Sunshine Coast Indigenous people aged 13-18yrs were asked to submit their artworks which showed their understanding of sexual health. The competition was aimed at raising and promoting education and awareness of sexual health issues amongst our youth.
The production of this calendar comes at a time when NCACCH has launched the 2007 Sexual Health Poster Competition, which again targets young Sunshine Coast Indigenous people within our service region and aims to raise and promote awareness around this rather important issue.

The competition theme this year is “Sexual Health and Relationships, Through the Eyes of an Indigenous Teenager” and NCACCH asks for your ongoing support to get our youth onboard by entering the competition and perhaps have their artwork displayed in our 2008/09 Calendar (for calendar details, see page seven).
This much anticipated calendar will be distributed shortly both nationally and throughout our local community. The entrants should feel very proud of their work and have a sense of accomplishment when they see their artwork hanging on the wall.
If you would like to purchase a copy of this original and colourful calendar, contact NCACCH for details.

WANNA BE DEADLY - SUNSHINE COAST “BLACK SWANS”

Budjawathin Namba (Strengthen Nambour): Nyenan Daaring Galang (Staying Strong and Proud) held May 20th, 2007 attracted over 300 people.
This event celebrated the achievements (over three months) of young Sunshine Coast people involved in the Wanna Be Deadly: Cultural Arts Project. The opportunity to participate in physical, nutritional and cultural activities, via health promotion was a big-hit with former Queensland Origin player, Dale Shearer supporting the day.
So successful was the ‘show-case’ day Uncle Ardy Muckan & Mayor Joe Natoli formally recognised Quota Park with a plaque & “red-flowering tea tree” planting indicating the significant meeting place, both past and present. Check it out with the family in the beautiful park surroundings.
In conjunction, with the Maroochy Council (Nambour Revisitation Project), Queensland Cancer, Go 2 & 5 Fruit & Veg, and Event Support Program the
Wanna Be Deadly Steering Committee would like to thank all members and volunteers, particularly the young people and their families for their efforts.
Come along and get involved - Your future participation is highly valued by the Wanna Be Deadly Youth Program. Keep ya ear out for various touch days in July & August (preparing for Caboolture Touch Carnival) + the Gubbi Shield Designs Project.

KEEP YOUR HEAD IN A HELMET

A helmet will save your life!
Every year young cyclists not wearing helmets are killed or badly injured. All of them were just normal Queensland kids like your children and their friends, and all of them probably thought that wearing a helmet wasn’t important. Well they thought wrong!
By wearing a helmet when riding a bike you reduce the chance of being killed or badly injured in a crash. It is also a good ideas to wear a helmet when riding a foot scooter.
Even though helmets may mess up your hair and can sometimes get hot and uncomfortable, the important thing to remember is helmets provide vital protection for your head.
If you are hit by a car when you’re not wearing a helmet you may end up with a fractured skull, brain damage or even paralysis.
Is it really worth the risk of spending the rest of your life in a wheelchair unable to feed yourself or talk properly just because you think helmets aren’t cool?

Things to remember when riding
You are legally required to:
obey all traffic signs and traffic lights
keep at least one hand on the handle bars at all times
always give hand signals to indicate what you’re about to do
not double anyone
not ride more than two side by side
have proper front and rear lights fitted if you are riding at night
have a reflector on the rear of your bike
fit your bike with a bell
fasten any luggage safely and securely
use a bike lane
never ride your bike a cross a pedestrian crossing
Cyclists aged over 16 years caught without a helmet may be issued with an on-the-spot Traffic Offence Notice.
Bike safety Bike helmets

To stay safe, you should:
make sure the bike is the right size for you
check the tyres and brakes regularly
always ride your bike on the left hand side of the road if practical
allow at least one metre between you and traffic
be courteous to motorists
remember motorist’s can’t always see you
Three strikes and you’re out
Apart from the risk of being killed or seriously injured, you can also be fined for not wearing a helmet.
1st Strike - Juvenile offenders and their parents/guardians will receive a cautionary Bicycle Offence listing the offence/s
2nd Strike - A warning letter will be sent advising a third offence may result in a penalty being applied.
3rd Strike - A traffic Offence Notice involving a penalty may be issued

ALL MURRI KIDS AGED 13-18YRS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ENTER

“SEXUAL HEALTH & RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH THE EYES OF AN
INDIGENOUS TEENAGER”

The 2007 NCACCH Sexual Health Poster Competition has commenced. The competition is aimed at raising and promoting education around sexual health and relationships, and targets 13-18yr old Indigenous Youth in the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions. Information has been distributed to schools within the NCACCH Service Area, as well as Sunshine Coast ATSI organisations and ATSI Community workers.
The competition asks that the entrees think about what positive sexual health and healthy relationships means to them. They are then required to put their ideas down on paper, in artwork form, demonstrating their understanding of these issues. Not only is this a great educational process (and a chance for families to discuss these topics), it is a great opportunity for our youth to display their artworks as the winning entries will be cast in a ‘2008/09 NCACCH Sexual Health Calendar’ which will be widely distributed around the country.
The competition ends at the close of business on the 7th of September 2007. So please help to make sure our young people have this info and the opportunity to be involved. The issues around Sexual Health and Relationships are a real and present danger in our society and health amongst our mob is especially important. Our youth are the future and education is the key to prevention, so please help to pass the message on.
