The Indigenous Governance Awards have been established to encourage, reward and promote best practice in Indigenous Governance. The awards are an annual event and incorporated Indigenous organizations from across the country were invited to enter. The National winner received $10,000 and two Achievement Awards were issued for $5,000 each. The award money will be used to further the development of the winning organizations. The Indigenous Governance Awards are a partnership project between Reconciliation Australia and BHP Billiton. The awards show what works in Indigenous governance and help to share experience and good ideas. By boosting awareness about the benefits of good governance, the awards will encourage organizations to invest time and energy into this important element of their work for indigenous communities. The wards also educate the wider Australian community by highlighting some of the good news in Indigenous Australia and the impressive achievements of their organization.

Tasmanian Brokerage Model Request A Success

The CEO (John Spink) and Jill Hogarth (Board Member) travelled to Hobart on the 8 and 9th September 2005 to meet with the Karadi Aboriginal Women's Corporation and gave a presentation on the "Brokerage Model." Arriving in Hobart on the Thursday, they were taken straight to Karadi to give the presentation.

A representative from the Tasmanian Division of General Practice, members of staff and members from the community were invited to attend the event. The presentation was very well received and the North Coast Brokerage Model DVD impressed all who viewed.

The staff and community members were very friendly and looked after John and Jill providing a great lunch. They met with the Northern Division of GP to discuss the model. They were inquisitive and impressed with how well it was working here on the Coast and Gympie areas. On the Friday, they met with OATSIH in which further discussions were made.

They were also impressed with how the model works. Karadi have been issued with $60K from OATSIH to implement and set up a brokerage model and are very keen to develop a contract with NCACCH to implement the model. This is great news for NCACCH and our community. It proves our service is successful and with the implementation and hopeful success of our first pilot it will ensure positive future proposals from other organizations/community groups across Australia.

MEMBER NUMBERS ON THE RISE

After holding our membership drive for the 2005/06 financial year, our memberships numbers have increased significantly. We now have 134 full members and 16 associate members. This is great for NCACCH and the services we provide and would like to thank everyone for their support. Your contributions will ensure the continuation of the services you are accustomed to.

Following is a comparison of figures between 2003/04 and 2004/05 financial years.

Change to Indigenous Dental Days

Effective 29 September 2005 the Caloundra Hospital Dental Clinic is no longer holding their Indigenous Dental Days. This is due to the high percentage rate of clients not showing for their appointments. BUT the Nambour Hospital Dental Clinic has agreed to hold Indigenous only days, on a trial basis, commencing 25 October 2005 between the times of 1.30pm -3.30pm.

This is a great and valuable service we have available to our community so if you to intend to use the service, please ensure you attend your appointments, or notify the clinic if you cannot attend. We would like to see this service continue and unless we use the system correctly we may not have it available to utilize in the future. Because NCACCH is a gap service we rely on operations like this to continue to ensure you, our clients, are kept in the best possible health.

Men's and Women's Groups
"Up and Running"

The Men’s and Women’s group are now up and running again and we would like to invite all interested person’s to attend. As most of you are aware, we had to temporarily stop our meetings due to lack of interest and funding. This is a great way of getting involved in your community and is a valuable form of networking in meeting other people in order to keep in touch with what’s happening. We appreciate your support and without your presence, will not be able to continue these groups. A good mixture of community and business members get together once a month to discuss business affecting you. We invite guest speakers to come along and talk to you about items of interest as requested by you. So please come along for a chat, bite to eat and make some new friends and contacts. Phone Sharelle on 54433599 to RSVP. Transport is available for both groups and can be arranged when confirming your attendance.

Contact a North Coast Referrer to complete an application form ( List of Community Referrers on the next page). Show proof of residence of the Sunshine Coast or Gympie District for at least 3 months e.g. electricity bill. Have and show your current Medicare Card which must be used in conjunction with the NCACCH Health Access Card.

ADULT HEALTH CHECKS AVAILABLE THROUGH YOUR LOCAL DOCTOR

Full Adult Health Assessments are currently being offered through your local doctor free of charge.

The purpose of the assessments are to enable GP's to undertake an holistic in-depth assessment of the health of a person in the context of their social and physical environment.

The doctor will do a basic assessment of the individuals physical, psychological and social health status and with joint identification with the patient consider the need for any preventative health care, support and/or education to improve functioning and quality of life.

The assessment is open to any Indigenous person's aged 55 years and over and non-indigenous person's aged 75 years and over. You also need to be living in your home only (including retirement village) not in hospital, day hospital, or in a residential aged care facility.

Client's may have an assessment once per year. The assessments can be done at the patients home, at the doctors surgery or a combination of both.

You may need to schedule two appointments though as they can take approx. 30-40 minutes to complete.

This is a great opportunity for our community to visit your local doctor and have an assessment done to ensure your health is at its best and any problems are diagnosed and preventative measures can be put in place if any issues are discovered.

EXTRA FUNDING REQUESTED

NCACCH has been feeling the strain on our budget in the 2004/05 year in supplying the services you are all accustomed to.

This is mainly due to people migrating to the Sunshine Coast from surrounding areas to access our services.

Extra funding has been requested through our funding body OATSIH to help keep up with the demand on services due to the increase of clients.

We now have 3033 clients on our database, which is 93% percent of the total Indigenous people who identify with the other 7% being non-indigenous. The 2001 census shows the total Indigenous population being 3100.
