Free Breastscreen sessions are currently being arranged with Breastscreen Qld (Groups of approx 12).
Why not take advantage of this great opportunity to come along and have a breastscreen done with the support of a friend or family member.
We’ve had a great response from the community from our first flyer and hope that enough interest continues to have this as a regular event.

TIPS FROM FAMILY PLANNING

Children live in a world where they receive sexual messages daily, from television, music, advertising and from their friends.

Sex is often joked about and discussed in a derogatory or stereotyped way. It’s important that children receive positive messages about sexuality.

Teaching about sexuality is an ongoing reponsiblility, not just a ‘one-off’ talk. As with other subjects such as road safety, math or even painting, information about sexuality should be given in an age-appropriate response.

Whatever age your children are, it’s never too late to start. Let them know this is an important subject and one that your are happy to talk about.

WHY 2 & 5?

Fruit and vegetable intake

Recent research shows that most adults would benefit from increasing their fruit and vegetable intake. A lifetime habit of eating fruit and vegetables every day can help prevent:

  • Some forms of cancer
  • Overweight and obesity
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Constipation

It can also:

* Reduce blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels

* Improve control of diabetes.

Back to the Index

Most people know that fruit and vegetables are good for you, but did you know that eating more fruit and vegies may be the single most important thing you can do to stay healthy and strong?
Australian adults should be eating 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables each day, but most Queenslanders only eat half this amount.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women should aim to eat 4 to 5 serves of fruit and 6 to 7 serves of vegetables to meet the extra demands of the body.
For more information or free recipes visit:-
www.gofor2and5.com.au

How many serves are you eating and what is a serve? There are lots of ways you can increase the number of serves you get each day. But, what is a serve? What if you eat a bowl of salad? Or, a carrot. Or a few spoons of peas. What makes a serve? It varies for different types of fruit and vegetables. 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables each day. Here’s a guide.

Vegetables

One serve of vegetables is 75 grams or:
· 1/2 cup cooked vegetables
· 1 medium potato
· 1 cup salad vegetables
· 1/2 cup cooked legumes (dried beans, peas or lentils)

Vegetables

Fruit

One serve of fruit is 150 grams of fresh fruit or:
· 1 medium-sized piece (eg. apple)
· 2 smaller pieces (eg apricots)
· 1 cup canned or chopped fruit
Choose fresh fruit instead of fruit juice or dried fruit. Juices have lower fibre content than fresh fruit. Dried fruit, if eaten in large quantities, can contribute to tooth decay because it contains a concentrated form of sugar that stick to your teeth.

ADULT HEALTH CHECKS

Full Adult Health Assessments are currently being offered through your local doctor free of charge.
The purpose of the assessments are to enable GP’s to undertake an holistic in-depth assessment of the health of a person in the context of their social and physical environment.
The doctor will do a basic assessment of the individuals physical, psychological and social health status and with joint identification with the patient consider the need for any preventative health care, support and/or education to improve functioning and quality of life.
The assessment is open to any Indigenous person’s aged 55 years and over and non-indigenous person’s aged 75 years and over.
You also need to be living in your home only (including retirement village) not in hospital, day hospital, or in a residential aged care facility.
Client’s may have an assessment once per year.

Back to the Index

The assessments can be done at the patients home, at the doctors surgery or a combination of both. You may need to schedule two appointments though as they can take approx. 30-40 minutes to complete.
This is a great opportunity for our community to visit your local doctor and have an assessment done to ensure your health is at its best and any problems are diagnosed and preventative measures can be put in place if any issues are discovered.
