In our last issue we advised our readers of the Indigenous Governance Awards, of which NCACCH was a finalist.
NCACCH received wide recognition and interest in the way our brokerage model works, with many communities contacting the office to enquire about our services and the way we provide them.
With great pride, we are pleased to announce we have been requested by OATSIH (Office for Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islander Health) to host a governance workshop in conjunction with YAAMBA in Bundaberg.
We have also been asked to work together with other Indigenous communities in the future.

The members and staff of NCACCH would like to wish everyone a happy Christmas and prosperous new year for 2006.
We would like to thank all members, guests and community for their continued support during 2005 and look forward to working with you all in the new year.

Our last men's and women's group meeting is due to be held on 02 December 2005 as a combined Christmas BBQ breakup. This will be held at Moffat Beach in Caloundra. This will give everyone the opportunity to mingle and meet other people involved in these groups.
The separate groups will start again in the new year, so if you have any suggestions or ideas about how we can better involve or the structure of these groups, please do not hesitate to contact NCACCH. We value your opinions and it is for the better of our people.
The men's group had a successful run this year with a great attendance at each of their BBQ breakfasts. Unfortunately, the women's group was not so successful. Their numbers have been very low and if you would like to see this very important event continue, we need more numbers. A new venue for the women's group will be looked at to make it more child friendly.
I would like to thank all the community members who have attended these groups during the year and with special thank you to all our guest speakers for their support and attendance. We hope to continue seeing you all in the new year.

FOOD CHOICES FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETES
Health eating for people with diabetes is no different to that which is recommended for everyone. By choosing healthy foods and being active you will help manage your blood glucose (sugar) levels and your weight. There is no need to prepare separate meals or buy special foods, so relax and enjoy health eating along with the whole family?
To help manage your diabetes, your meals need to be: regular and spread evenly through the day, lower in fat, particular saturated fat and based on high fibre carbohydrate foods such as wholegrain breads and cereals, beans, lentils, fruit and vegetables.
Along with health eating, regular physical activity can help you to manage your blood glucose levels, reduce your blood fats (cholesterol & triglycerides) and maintain a healthy weight.
When planning for meal time, choose foods you like and which satisfy you and remember to include carbohydrate foods in each meal or snack to help manage your blood glucose levels.
For more information you can contact or join Australia's leading diabetes organization "Diabetes Australia" on 1300 136 588. They can give you information on support groups, dietary services, educational information, magazines and children's services.
Dietitians are also based in many local hospitals, diabetes centre's and community health centre's.
Diabetes Australia recommends that everyone with diabetes visit a dietitian for personal advice.

Farewell Sharelle
As most of you are aware, Sharelle will be taking 12 months leave commencing 15 December 2005. She is heading overseas on a working holiday.
The project officer role will not be filled during her absence. We may have to contract someone to organise upcoming events and important other duties arising.
The staff and members of NCACCH would like to thank Sharelle for her services over the past 10 months and wish her well in her travels.
SEXUAL HEALTH POSTER COMPETITION
The Sexual Health Poster Competition was extended and closed on the 25 November 2005. We had a great response from a various range of age groups with 21 entries lodged.
We will now start organising for the judging panel to gather together and make a decision on the winning entries. The winners will be announced at a luncheon to be held in the new year.
All entrants will be invited to attend as well as special guests from the community.
Thank you to everyone who committed their time and effort into submitting an entry and good luck to all. |
TRADITIONAL GAMES
The "Wanna Be Deadly" traditional games were held at Hervey Bay over the weekend of the 19-20 November 2005. The Sunshine Coast had a great representation of 21 youth who participated in the games.
Travis Shorey, Sharelle Eggmolesse, Elliot Anderson, Chris May and Donna Eshuys accompanied and supervised the youth for the week-end.
On the Saturday, the kids had seven stations in which they participated in traditional games from around Australia with a modern twist. Our group, had a great time learning new skills such as team work
Work and communication. We stayed at the QCCC in Hervey Bay with all the kids being very well behaved.
On the Sunday we had a touch football competition in which we had 2 teams. Overall our team came second which is a great achievement for a group of young lads who only met each other that week-end.
NCACCH donated our bus for the transport and without this assistance we would not have been able to participate. We look forward to attending next years event with the same amount of interest and enthusiasm as this year.

SHARED RESPONSIBILITY AGREEMENTS
The Australian Government is improving the way services are provided to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities. The new arrangements mean that Indigenous communities are involved in deciding how government programs will meet community needs.
There are currently 29 Indigenous Coordination Centres (ICC's) around Australia. These new centres have replaced ATSIC and consist of different representatives from different departments. They look after most of the Australian Government's Indigenous programs and negotiate Shared Responsibility Agreements (SRA's) with local Indigenous people and communities . SRAs spell out what communities, governments and others will contribute to achieve long term changes in Indigenous Communities .
A reference group is set up in each community where representatives from each local organisation get together form a focus group and develop a 12 month action plan.
The plan is directed at solving communities needs and concerns.
Back to the Index |
This group is given money to contract a community broker who will work with this group to set up and ensure the action plan is a success.
John Spink (CEO) and Jill Hogarth (Board Member) have attended meetings with the ICC's along with representatives from other Aboriginal organisations in the region. They wish to select a body to auspice the funds to contract the community broker. With only a few organisations attending the meeting, nothing has been decided on this request. As future meetings are held, we will keep you updated on the development of this group.
