GENERAL UPDATES

Medicare Numbers
In the near future, it will be necessary for NCACCH to document Medicare numbers for all our clients. This will allow us to compare our data with that of our funding body and Medicare, and to help keep accurate figures on our GP visits. It will also assist with the continuation of our funding.
What this means for clients, is you will have to provide your Medicare card numbers with each referral and HAC application.
Your information with remain strictly confidential and your privacy will not be breached in any way. |
MEN’S AND WOMEN’S GROUP
With the men’s and women’s group being put on hold while Sharelle was away on maternity leave, we are sure all of you will be happy to know they will be commencing again in the new year.
The men’s group has been a great success in the past and we look forward to the same attendance numbers in the new year. We will be holding BBQ breakfasts on the beach during summer and then moving it indoors during the cooler months.
The women’s group were down in numbers, but we are hoping to increase this next year. We had been holding child friendly BBQ lunches for the ladies in the park and hope to continue in the new year.
These groups give our people a chance to get together and yarn about what is happening in our community, and guest speakers are also invited along to talk about topics important to us. It is a great opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and relax in the company of others.
The attendance numbers are critical for these groups to continue so we encourage all you mob to get together and interact and attend these groups as often as possible. |

Are you at risk???

Diabetes is the fastest growing non-infectious disease in the world. For every person who has diabetes there is another person who has it and doesn’t know.
Diabetes is a serious health condition.
There is no cure. If left untreated it can cause heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness, amputation, and erectile dysfunction.
If diagnosed early, diabetes can be effectively managed and the risk of serious health problems greatly reduced.
Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes, can be successfully managed or even prevented by maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular physical activity and having healthy eating patterns.
If you think you may have Type 2 diabetes, make an appointment with your doctor for a fasting blood glucose test.

KIDS HELP LINE
Want someone to yarn with?
1800 551800

|
Kids Help Line has been supporting children and young people, 5—18 year olds, for 15 years. Each year, they take over 500,000 calls from all over Australia on topics that range from loneliness and family breakdown to bullying, physical and sexual abuse to threats of suicide. There are many young people who are still alive today because they rang a Kids Help Line counsellor.
Indigenous children and young people made up 3.6% of calls to Kids help line between 01 July 2002—30 June 2005 —which is considerably higher than the proportion of people of Indigenous backgrounds of 2.2%. We must encourage our young people to talk about their problems and this could be the safest, easiest and cheapest way to do that. All information is strictly confidential and all the counsellors are well trained and qualified to help.
According to the Kids Help Line statistics there are ten issues that stand out as the major concerns for indigenous callers. Together these ten problems account for over 76% of calls from young Indigenous Australians. The graph below shows the rates of calls across the ten main reasons why our young people seek help.
Grief and Loss 4.4%
Drug or Alcohol Use 4.7%
Leaving Home/Homelessness 5.0%
Child Abuse 5.4% Emotional & Behaviour 5.7%
Violence 5.9%
Bullying 8.5%
Partner Relationships 8.6%
Peer Relationships 10.1%
Family Relationships 20.6%

NCACCH hold Referrers workshops every 3 months to keep our Referrers up to date with policy and procedure updates and changes.
This is a great opportunity to come together and discuss any issues they may be facing in the community or with our clients. It is also great to know all NCACCH information is being distributed correctly and in a concise manner.
All our Referrers go through a thorough process to ensure they are suitable for the position. Most, if not all of our community will know at least one of these Referrers. Referrers make it easier for us to process and record information for referrals to services and Health Access Card applications.
The last referrers workshop was held on 24 November 2006 at Tranquil Park in Maleny. We would like to thank all who attended and on behalf of the Board and Staff of NCACCH we would congratulate them all on a job well done and for taking the time to help our clients to access our services. We look forward to working with them all again in the new year.
